Western's Mustang Parents & Supporters Newsletter Edition 4

We've reached the end of the summer, and we hope your students are excited to start their university careers. We know this is a busy time, but wanted to take a few moments to share some important resources that will be available to benefit your student this fall.

Your student is just beginning an incredible journey, and there are so many ways to get involved, resources to lean on for support and connections to make. Maybe at this point, they feel like it's tough to know even where to start. We recommend exploring our Student Experience options.

Broughdale

We have serious concerns for students who choose to be a part of large street parties in the fall and the impact of dangerous behaviours that can occur.

Student safety is Western's top priority. Let's preserve the school year you'd hoped for.

Illegal and unsanctioned street gatherings are unsafe spaces and come with serious risks and consequences: Alcohol poisoning. Gender-based violence. Falling off rooftops. Increased risk of COVID spread. The Unknown.

Your student is at a decision-making intersection, encourage them to choose to:

  • BE SAFE.
  • MAKE GOOD DECISIONS. (For themself and others)
  • TAKE CARE. (Of themself, each other and our community)

Vaccination Requirement for Students Living in Residence

Students living residence are required to comply with the vaccination timeline as stated in the Residence Contract. Unless having received an approved accommodation, your student will be required to have received their first dose of an approved vaccine no later than September 13, 2021, and their second dose no later than October 12, 2021. Acceptable COVID-19 vaccines for international students can be found here. Students must upload proof of vaccination or approved accommodation through the link that they've received from the University via email.

Until students have submitted proof that they are fully vaccinated (second dose plus two weeks), students will be required to participate in rapid testing for COVID-19 twice a week to attend campus, with results submitted to the University.

Failure to comply with these requirements may result in a termination of the Residence Contract and/or not being permitted to attend campus after October 12, 2021.

It is strongly recommended that your student be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arriving on campus. If your student was unable to get vaccinated before move-in, they can attend the on-campus vaccination and testing centre to receive their first or second dose of vaccine. Students can schedule a vaccination appointment online to avoid longer wait times on-site.

USC Bus Pass

In collaboration with the London Transit Commission (LTC), the University Students' Council (USC) is pleased to provide eligible full-time undergraduate students at Western with the USC Bus Pass. This pass provides free unlimited rides, at all bus stop locations, during all hours of operation, seven days a week (including holidays). Eligible students are automatically assessed the mandatory fee for a bus pass, which is loaded onto their Western One card and valid from September 1 until August 31 of the following year. There is no option to opt-in or opt-out of the USC Bus Pass for the 2021-2022 academic year. It is a mandatory plan, authorized by a student referendum that requires all eligible, full-time undergraduate students to participate.

The Spoke & Wave

The Spoke's iconic bagels are back! The Spoke Cafe is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. daily. We are working hard to bring some exciting changes to make your dining experiences even better. The Spoke is adding new espresso equipment, revamping our coffee and specialty beverage program, as well as introducing exciting new smoothie recipes. On August 31, we were thrilled to reopen The Wave with a brand new menu, and upgrades to our dining room and service styles. Our already great food will be even better with more flexibility and control over the type and length of your experience. It has been too long, and the USC can't wait to welcome you back, or for your first visit, to The Spoke and The Wave!

Foot Patrol volunteers walking on campus

Foot Patrol

Western's campus is a beautiful place, and very big! It is understandable that for those new to campus, it could be overwhelming, especially at night. The student in your life does not have to walk alone! Foot Patrol is a free service that will send a team to walk your student anywhere on main campus, Brescia, Huron, King's, and some off-campus locations. Our student volunteers can walk in their identifiable vests, or in plain clothes for more discretion. Whether they're studying late at the library, working out at Campus Recreation, or finishing class at 10pm - whatever the reason, we can walk with them to their destination. We begin providing service for the campus community on September 13.
