Western's Mustang Parents & Supporters Newsletter Edition 3

August has arrived and Western is energized with preparations for the new semester. Partners across the Western community are finalizing the details for our innovative programs and services that will foster inclusive, supportive, and caring Mustang communities for all students. This important work involves staff, faculty, and a large number of enthusiastic student volunteers. We encourage new students to participate in programming that introduces them to faculty and staff as well as their peers, so that their network on campus includes experienced professionals who are dedicated to their success. We're all looking forward to welcoming you to Western!

Moving into Residence

If your student will be living in residence, please note that students are required to have received at least their first COVID-19 vaccine dose within 14 days following their move-in date. Students are also required to have received their second dose no later than October 22, 2021.

If your student is arriving from within Canada, they will need to book their move-in timeslot through the myHousing portal by 11:59 p.m. August 31, 2021. If your student is not able to get fully vaccinated prior to moving in, Western is operating an on-campus vaccination centre which your student can attend on move-in day to receive their first or second shot.

If your student is arriving from an international location, they should plan to arrive between August 15–18 to complete a quarantine before the school year, and register this early arrival in the myHousing Portal as soon as possible.

Help your student get ready by checking out residence Move-In Planning Guide. Learn what to pack, what not to pack, and what the University provides. Check back in the coming weeks as we’ll be updating it with more information before their move.

  • If they have a disability and have concerns about accessibility at Western, then YES.

Encourage them to connect with us early. We are here all summer to help. The best time to meet with an Accessible Education Counsellor is after they have registered in courses. Email aew@uwo.ca to book an appointment, or register with us on our website.

Dietary Accommodations in Residence

If your student is living in residence and has special dietary requirements, we encourage them to self-identify by contacting Nutrition Services. Career Support

Our Career Education team assists students in designing careers that are meaningful. With a framework that encourages students to gain a better understanding of the linkages between their degree, experiences, and interests, we support students in exploring the myriad career options available to them. By reframing the "what can I do with my degree" question into "how can I use my degree to help me achieve the career I want", we guide, support and challenge students to think differently about their futures, and provide tools to help them plan careers that are meaningful to them.

Office of the Ombudsperson

Hopefully, it is all smooth sailing for your student, but when it is not, the Ombuds Office is here to provide confidential, impartial, and independent advice on everything from concerns with course delivery to residence conduct issues. We will discuss your student's concern with them, let them know what their rights and responsibilities are as a Western student, and prepare them for the next steps. We will review appeal letters and notes for discussions with persons in authority. If we cannot help, we will direct the student to an office that can. Ombuds staff sees over 800 students a year--that is 1 in every 49 students! Visit our website to learn more about what we do and how to find us.
